What to Avoid When Shopping for Car Insurance: 4

insurance-4You also need to be aware that, quite often, in the scheme of things, the minimum requirement for car insurance put into place by your state is not important. This is definitely one case where it is typically better to err on the side of caution, so you should not automatically assume that the minimum requirement in your state will provide enough coverage.

Remember, you may be left paying a surprisingly high amount if you are in an accident where the damages surpass that limitation. Accidents happen, and you can pretty much bet that you will not always suffer a “minimum amount” of damage.

So, for that reason, you may want to think about investing in an umbrella policy. These policies are not incredibly expensive, and both you and your assets will be protected — just in case.

insurance-3A lot of drivers do not understand all that there is to know about their car insurance deductibles and their car insurance premiums. Understanding these factors is imperative if you do not want to make any financially devastating, bank account draining mistakes when you are choosing the right policy.

Primarily, it is vital that you understand the relationship between your premium and your deductible. To put it quite simply, an inverse relationship exists between them. In other words, if you have a higher deductible, then you will have a lower premium. By the same token, if you have a lower deductible, then you will conversely have a higher premium.

If you choose to keep a high deductible, then your premiums will be lower. This will allow you to use the mounting difference as savings, so it can later be used for your deductible, should the need arise.

auto-insurance-2The type of car insurance you will be getting is also tricky — there are lots of mistakes you need to avoid in that area. For instance, some agents will try to make you think that you have to get the same kind of policy for all of the cars you are insuring, but that simply is not true. Falling prey to that can cost you a lot more money, in fact. The thing to remember is that, by and large, an older car does not need full coverage. Comprehensive coverage, collision coverage — those really are not necessary for an older model.

You can generally go by this rule: if the total value of your car comes out to less than about ten times the cost of your premiums, you do not need that coverage.

auto-insurance-1Although most of us are understandably eager to get the best possible deal on our car insurance rates, you cannot be too eager, otherwise you might make some common but easily avoidable mistakes.

A lot of times, it is tempting to sort of … fib about your driving history. A couple of little white lies never hurt anyone, right? Wrong! In fact, lying about anything on your driving history can hurt you quite a lot — it can, in fact, cause your insurance applications to get rejected altogether, and no one wants that.

You have to be honestly. Remember, any car insurance company worth its salt is going to verify all the information you give it on your application. If a company discovers that you have lied about a ticket or other traffic violation, it can do worse than simply reject you. A little lie may also cause you to get reclassified as a high risk, so it will be well nigh impossible to get affordable coverage at all.

Insuring Your Classic Car: 4

Wednesday, July 1st, 2009

collector-4A lot of components of the classic or collector’s car must be considered as well. In a lot of ways, classic car insurance can be similar to regular car insurance, because a lot of times, you need to have coverage for bodily injury, medical, liability, and things of that nature.

You may decide on an Agreed Value insurance policy, which is the best protection you can get for your classic car. You and the insurance company come to an agreement concerning the value of the car and you pay a premium.

Stated Value insurance is another policy. Here, you can state a value to your car that can be higher than its book value, but it cannot be the actual value of your car.

Actual Cash Value insurance is the least desirable, because it leaves most of the decisions in the insurance company’s hands.
