This is definitely one case where it is typically better to err on the side of caution, so you should not automatically assume that the minimum requirement in your state will provide enough coverage.

Remember, you may be left paying a surprisingly high amount if you are in an accident where the damages surpass that limitation. Accidents happen, and you can pretty much bet that you will not always suffer a “minimum amount” of damage.

So, for that reason, you may want to think about investing in an umbrella policy. These policies are not incredibly expensive, and both you and your assets will be protected — just in case.

Understanding these factors is imperative if you do not want to make any financially devastating, bank account draining mistakes when you are choosing the right policy.

Primarily, it is vital that you understand the relationship between your premium and your deductible. To put it quite simply, an inverse relationship exists between them. In other words, if you have a higher deductible, then you will have a lower premium. By the same token, if you have a lower deductible, then you will conversely have a higher premium.

If you choose to keep a high deductible, then your premiums will be lower. This will allow you to use the mounting difference as savings, so it can later be used for your deductible, should the need arise.
